Music industry mourns 'warm' singer Janita

Afrikaans singer Janita Claassen died on Monday morning in the Sungardens Hospice, Pretoria, exactly 10 years after she was diagnosed with cancer of the thymus gland.

Claassen, 58, spent a long time in the Wilgers Hospital since the cancer recurred about a year ago. She was moved to the hospice last week.

News of the singer's illness, known for her warm personality as well as for her music, sent a shockwave through the Afrikaans music industry, especially when the cancer decreased her lung capacity so much that she had to use oxygen constantly.

She was diagnosed with the cancer in October 1995. Ten years later, to the month, she died just before 5.30am at the hospice.

Date: Oct 24 2005
